Newlyn Pilchard Works
Newlyn is a renowned fishing harbour in West Cornwall. The Newlyn Pilchard Works have been established since 1905 and is the last working salt pilchard factory in the country. It takes pride in using traditional hand-pressed methods in wooden barrels and is an Award Winning Museum open to the public.
The individual tinned pilchards are beautifully decorated with paintings from the famous Newlyn School of Painters, which gave this area the reputation it has for art and sculpture.
Known in Northern Italy as "Salacche Inglesi", Cornish salt pilchards, which taste similar to salted anchovies, are available as fillets or in oil and also smoked in the tinned form.
The glass jar of sardines is no longer available.
